Weather forecast doesn’t dampen Wolds runners…
The weather forecasters predicted a lousy day – but they were wrong, well almost. Over 650 motorcyclists turned out in beautiful sunshine to support the Lincs Notts Air Ambulance, via the CBG Lincs Aviation Heritage Wolds Run, at East Kirkby’s Aviation Heritage Centre, in Lincolnshire.
The run was over 40 or so miles of the area’s best surfaced minor roads, before returning for all to watch as the Panton brothers’ resident Lancaster bomber – Just Jane – performed the first of her two taxi runs.
The centre’s facilities were open for the visitors, including the chapel, the control tower complete with mannequins and the spooky but original op’s room background sounds, the NAAFI was doing a roaring trade with Lincolnshire speciality Ostrich burgers, plus the main hangar museum had all its period vehicles on display including the Bedford Queen Mary low loader which takes visitors for trips around the airfield.
The weather did deteriorate eventually but most stayed for Jane’s second run before kitting up to take their chances on a wet ride home.
Presently the organising Skellingthorpe MCC is still totting up the final figure but it will certainly be several thousand pounds toward a very worthy cause.
