Stuart Towner on his 1930 Rudge was undeterred though, and defeated Men In Black vintage speedway rider Terry Stone (Douglas).
The Smith family from Nuneaton also enjoyed success. Father Chris rode 350 and 500 JAPs and his son Charlie took the Cadet class while daughters Jessica and Madeline got the Junior and Intermediate classes respectively.
Andy Gomm (Jawa) made the only sub 10 second run to take fastest time of the day, but not far behind was Greg Speed on a smart Cheney BSA in the Motocross class.
You didn’t need grass track or speedway machinery to be competitive. Ralph Ballhatchet had a 1927 Model 9 Francis-Barnett. Ralph took advantage of the 172cc Villiers-powered trials model’s eligibility for several categories and got in a number of climbs and collected a trophy to boot.
