In the Senior race Daniell was in no mood to scrap with anyone, taking the lead almost from the flag he steadily built up a huge lead and set a new lap record of 69.52. Early on Les Archer (495cc Velocette) chased Daniell, but crashed out.
From an entry of 29 for the Senior Clubmans race seven Scotts screamed into action much to the delight of the crowd, but the event went to E W Day’s Norton.
Almost every imaginable formula had been tried for The Southern Trial – this year, organiser Mr H M Newbury created a 90 mile route with special sections designed to stretch the modern motorcycle along with the more familiar observed sections and tests. A total of 74 entrants lined up for the start at Alton, Hampshire, including many of the country’s leading sidecar boys. Most regarded this year’s experiment of combining observed sections with special tests a success, including winners Alan Jeffries (349cc Triumph solo) and Harold Tozer (496cc BSA sidecar).
